Michael Waltrip Racing's David Reutimann knocked Jeff Gordon off the pole position early in the qualifying run but posted a time that was fast enough to keep other drivers at bay — and take home a $60,000 Beretta Shotgun.
"We were able to go out there and thank the Lord have a good solid lap," Reutimann said. "It feels really really good to get that pole because they are hard to come by.
"It means you have actually won something. You've beat everyone else out there. As drivers we are a little bit goofy about that we want to beat everyone at everything all the time. At the end of the day I think it is more for the guys at the shop and the guys on the road. It's a big deal for them because they get you ready to come out here."
As for Gordon, not that he didn't want the pole, but earlier in the day he was the recipient of the pole award that he won last year. Walking away from the impound area, where the No. 24 National Guard/DuPont Chevrolet was sitting, Gordon was overhead joking with a crew member about Reutimann's run.
"Man, he might of done me a favor I would have to pay taxes on another shotgun," Gordon joked. He will now start on the outside pole, next to Reutimann's No. 00 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota.
